Douglas Burns McGowan PhD

BRUNSWICK - Douglas Burns McGowan, 81, passed away on December 11, 2021 due to complications from Covid-19. He was surrounded by family at the time of his passing. Douglas was born in Ashland, Maine on May 7, 1940 to Burns and Bertha (Smart) McGowan. He was a classroom teacher, Director of Adult Education, and Dean of Continuing Education. His formal education includes a Ph.D. from UCONN. His long career as a dedicated educator has contributed greatly to the lives of many. Douglas married Sandra Smith in 1961 and together they raised four children on their small farm in Mapleton. They have always shared a special "oneness" and their marriage is an inspiration to all who know them. Douglas enjoyed gardening, winemaking, picking fiddleheads, and long walks on a Florida beach. He wore a big smile and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was generous in his care for family and friends, neighbors, and even strangers. His favorite time was spent with his loving family. Douglas is the beloved husband of Sandra (Smith) McGowan; father of Mark (Tina) McGowan, Laura (Vaughn) Chase, Kathryn (Jeff) Joiner, and Scott (Linda) McGowan; grandfather of Lewis (Heather) Chase, April (Tim) Chase, Brooke Chase, Cole Chase, and Emma McGowan; great-grandfather of Abigail Chase and Aaron Chase; grandfather of Heather Castonguay, Kaitlin Knight, Shawn Knight and their children; brother of Barbara Cowett, Jill (Peter) Brown, and Thomas McGowan; and friend to many, including close friend Norman Keefe. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered always. We will see him again on the other side. Proverbs 20:7 "The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him." A memorial service will be held privately.
