Joyce Ann Maloney Stewart, age 83, was known for her Irish smile, charm, and wit and as her high school yearbook states: “ladylike manner, utmost in refinement, sweet attitude wins her friends”. Joyce passed away peacefully in Maine on March 14, 2022 with her daughter and grandson at her side. She was the proud Mom of two children and a very proud grandmother. Joyce is predeceased by her son Thomas Patrick Stewart who tragically died in an avalanche in Colorado in 1993 at the age of 28. Joyce is also predeceased by her brother Walter Michael Maloney, her sister Susan Maloney Schneider, and husband Robert Douglas Stewart. Joyce was a resident of Verona in her early years and attended Our Lady of the Lake School. She and her family moved to Avon by the Sea, New Jersey where she attended and was a 1956 graduate of Saint Rose High School in Belmar, NJ. Joyce was very proud of being a 1960 graduate of Caldwell College with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education/English and maintains friendships with the terrific women she graduated with. Joyce was a teacher, an avid reader, enjoyed Verona programs such as Yoga and Meditation lead by Anne Shields, Senior Exercise Class and Cooking with Carlos. Joyce was a Master Gardener and helped lead programs for that organization. She enjoyed taking trips with her girlfriends to Italy, Michigan, New England, Florida and the Grand Canyon, to name a few. Her favorite trips were the trips to Ireland that she made with her nieces, daughter and grandson. She cherished her many trips to Maine to visit with her daughter and grandson, Cameron. She was a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church and could be found in the same pew every Sunday for 9:00 AM mass. Joyce began her working life as an elementary school teacher in Bradley Beach, New Jersey. She moved back to Verona after her marriage and upon her children attending Verona High School, she was a substitute teacher at the Lanning and Forest Avenue Schools. She began working for the Township of the Borough of Verona in 1980 as the Secretary to the Building Inspector. She was also secretary to the Planning Board, Rent Board and Board of Adjustment. Joyce also enjoyed working at the Verona Library upon retirement from the Building inspector’s office at the age of 70. Joyce is survived by her Daughter Jeannie Stewart Munro, her Grandson Cameron McDermott Munro, Nieces: Karen Schneider Garrahy, Eileen Schneider Gray, Meghann Maloney Morris, grandniece Kaitlin Gray, grandnephew Connor Maloney, and Sister in-law Silvia Maloney. She is also survived by other nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends. Joyce’s family would like to thank all of the neighbors and friends that supported her throughout her life and later in life such as the Hynes family, the Rodgers family, and the amazing and supportive neighbors of the Brookside Terrace area. Joyce and her family would also like to thank Visiting Angels of Suburban Essex, especially Kathryn Rhoades and Memory Care at Market Square in South Paris Maine for all of their supportive, loving and compassionate care. A celebration of life is being planned for Joyce in June with a date and location to be determined in Verona, NJ.
