September 6, 1943 - March 19, 2022
Marietta Angelina Santangelo, 78, of Windham, ME, passed away on March 19, 2022 after a long illness. Marietta was born on September 6, 1943 to Frank Santangelo and Anna Marie (DeSantis) in Vineland, New Jersey. After losing her mother at the age of four, she and her siblings had a tumultuous childhood. As a teenager she moved to Orlando, Florida with her father to settle near extended family and there met her husband, William S. Miller. They were wed in 1960 and had two children, Stacia Louise and Terri Lynn, they divorced amicably in 1983 and William passed away in 2009. Marietta never remarried. Marietta’s compassion, empathy, and humor defined her life, making all those who knew her love her. She excelled at helping and supporting others, family and friends alike, through the difficult times in their lives. Her nature as a caregiver led her to decide on a career in nursing. After ten years of being a stay-at-home mom, she returned to adult education to get her high school diploma and was then accepted into a rigorous Baccalaureate Nursing program at Central Maine Medical Center. She graduated with honors and was, by unanimous vote of her fellow classmates, awarded with, “The Nurse Who I Would Most Want to Care for Me” award. Her career in nursing ran the gamut; OR scrub nurse for orthopedics, recovery room, charge nurse, traveling nurse, and private-duty nursing. Marietta loved to travel and often ended up living in the places she visited. During adulthood she lived in Egypt, St. John USVI, Florida, and Maine. She travelled to Iceland, Ireland, and made many trips to Italy as it was her favorite destination. Marietta was passionate about her family, her Italian heritage and cooking Italian food. She loved planning for holidays and family gatherings and was happiest when she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren. We will all miss her greatly. Marietta was predeceased by her sister Barb Morrison, niece Sandy Morrison and brothers Jack and Joseph Santangelo. She is survived by her sister Angelina Santangelo, daughters Stacia Johnson and Terri Miller, grandchildren Ilea Libby, Walker Olinsky, Alexa Watson, and Tucker Olinsky, great-grandchildren Lola Casas, and Grayson Libby, and numerous other family members. A special thank you must be offered for her close companion Tony Casas. Steadfast and kind of heart, he has repaid her kindness to him by being at her side caring for her during these last nine years. Chauffeur, cook, caregiver and most of all friend, his enduring gentle compassion has made her later years comfortable and safe, enabling her to remain in her home. The family requests that all notes be sent to PO Box 121, Andover, Maine 04216. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her name to your local animal shelter. There will be no services. A celebration of life will be held when it is once again safe to do so.
