Obituary

Columbia Falls- Carl Gerard Berthiaume Sr. was born in Biddeford, Maine on October 14, 1965, to Aline (Paradis) Mahoney and the late Roland F. Berthiaume Jr. His sunset was on February 1, 2025, at age 59, following complications from a stroke. His family was by his side at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland. Carl attended schools in Biddeford and South Portland, and before graduating from South Portland High School he broke the school's record for the high jump. This record remained in effect for many years. After graduating, he continued working in the retail business for the next 41 years. Working for Shaw's Supermarket, BJ's Wholesale Club, LL Bean, and Hannaford. Since June 2011 he has worked for Leola at her Independent Hannaford stores, 4 Corner's Shop'n Save Supermarket (Columbia) at the time of his passing as the Grocery Manager and the BaySide Shop'n Save Supermarket (Milbridge) having been the Meat Department Manager. Over the years he developed many relationships with co-workers, vendors, and customers alike and was a dedicated and passionate employee. Carl met his wife Deborah (Lamson) in February 2009 via Plenty of Fish's dating site. Two months later he relocated to Downeast Maine. They later married on December 31, 2019. He would often comment that he was still on the hook. He was her soul mate, friend, her confidant, and there was never a dull moment in any of their adventures. Carl was affectionally known as Dad, Love Bug, Bonus Dad, and Papa Carl. From the blended family he was a part of and the one he created he leaves behind his wife Debi, his children, Diandra (DeDe) Berthiaume of Quincy, MA, Carl (CJ) Berthiaume Jr. and fiancée Maddie of Westbrook, Ciera (CiCi) Berthiaume of Windham, (their mom, Angela), Candace (James) Sergeant of Ellsworth and Cassie Daris of Columbia Falls. Grandchildren, Harper Berthiaume, Damien and Destiny Daris, Elizabeth and William Pileski, Maya (Bradley) Fields and great-grandchildren Hunter and Walker. His mother, Aline of Old Orchard Beach, brother Allen Berthiaume of York, sister Nichole (Paul) Hamm of Saco, stepmother Shirley Berthiaume and stepbrother Steven (Angela) Smith of South Portland, God Parents Gerard and Priscille Paradis of Dayton, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, cousins, family and friends. Carl will be remembered for his unique sense of humor, charming smile, his outgoing personality, competitiveness, his happy dance, sweet tooth, his hugs, kindness, his big heart, and the way he loved his wife and family. Everyone he met became friends. He loved sports, especially watching his New York Yankees, New York Giants, and Philadelphia Flyers and participating in multiple fantasy football leagues. Carl was the family weatherman, news reporter and TV guide. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping, kayaking, mini golf, barbecuing, 4-wheeling, horseshoes, corn hole, golf, and his mini vacations in his hot tub. He loved traveling to southern Maine to visit family and if possible, would make stops at Reilly's Bakery, Pizza by Alex and the Portland Head Light House. Sometimes trips were down and back on the same day just to watch DeDe, CJ or CiCi play their school or college sports games. Carl is extremely proud of his family, 19+ years of sobriety, his Barren View Golf Course hole in one, his fantasy football trophy, and his accomplishments during his lifetime. He loved his dogs, Eli and Max and horses Fancy and Wyatt. Horses Sinny and Whinny were already waiting for him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who love him and know him. Carl was predeceased by his father Roland, stepfather Joseph Mahoney, stepbrothers Joseph and Philip Smith, his half sibling Guy Chenard, his wife's parents Leearnal and Myrna Lamson. Rest in peace Carl and worry no more. There is no more work to do, no trucks to unload, no vendors to tend, no carts to round up, no hay rolls to roll, no snow to shovel or firewood to stack. We know you are watching over us and we love you! A celebration of life will take place in the future. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity. The family would like to thank the Washington County Communications Center, Pleasant River Ambulance, Gouldsboro Paramedic Services, DownEast Community Hospital, LifeFlight, MaineHealth Maine Medical Center and Maine Cremation Care for all your professional services, help and kindness during this time.
