Ms. Garniss was born in Boston to Freeman and Sybil Nute Garniss on July 12, 1932. She graduated from Whitman, MA, High School, received an Associate Degree from Vermont Junior College and attended the University of Iowa. She joined the State Department in 1960. She did her interim work at the Boston Passport Agency before transferring to Washington, D.C. and the Foreign Service. Her overseas posts included: Ankara, Turkey; London, England; La Paz, Bolivia; Saigon, Vietnam; Bonn, Germany; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Brussels, Belgium; Paris, France;, Prague, Czech Republic; and Havana, Cuba. After retirement, she moved to Yarmouth, ME. She taught briefly at Casco Bay College, Portland, and was a part-time agent at Casco Bay Travel, Portland. She was a member of the Women's Literary Union and enjoyed playing bridge. Surviving are her brother, Howard and wife Joan; nieces Linda Garniss of Nice, France and Gretchen Garniss of Stoneham, MA; one nephew, Jonathan Garniss and wife Dawn Diamante of Stoughton, MA; one great nephew, one great niece and two great, great nephews. The family thanks the staff and management of Falmouth By The Sea for their care and kindness during Ms. Garniss illness. There will be no visitation and burial will be private.
