Obituary

Donald Robert "DJ" James was born on March 13, 1963, at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He later settled in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where he spent many of his early years in the foster care system. Affectionately known as "Stats Man," Don could tell you anything about any player on the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, or even the less important teams. At 29, he met the love of his life, Brenda in Portland, Maine, and together they had one daughter, Emma. Through Brenda, he was also blessed with two stepdaughters, Vanessa and Kayla, whom he loved deeply. Don's life was hard from the very beginning. Born into circumstances that couldn't contain his spark, he turned to substances early in life. Yet, despite his struggles with addiction, he remained one of the most generous souls you could ever meet. Everyone close to him has a story about Don giving away his coat to a stranger, his last few dollars to someone in need, or showing up for people when no one else would. He had a heart of gold, and those lucky enough to know him witnessed that kindness firsthand. Don's daughter, Emma, was the light of his life. He was her first best friend and introduced her to so many of the things she loves today: late-night video game sessions, Pepsi with ice, basketball, dogs and more. But most importantly, he taught her life's greatest lessons: how to be supportive yet set boundaries, how to keep an open heart and mind, how to be patient — so very patient — and above all, how to forgive. Don passed away surrounded by the people he loved most. He will be remembered for his sparkling Irish eyes, his perfectly crooked smile, and his humor and warmth that never faded, even at the end. He is survived by his daughter, Emma James, and her husband, Justin Velasquez, whom he was so proud to call his son-in-law; his stepdaughters Vanessa Hopkins and Kayla Dow; Emma's mother, Brenda Hopkins; and his brothers Torrey, Robbie, and Jeff.
