Gorham and Caribou - Glenna Marquita (Abernethy) Nevers, 88, died peacefully on January 27, 2025 in Gorham. She was born on February 23, 1936 in Durham Bridge, New Brunswick, Canada and was the daughter of John Merlin and Helen Margaret (Grant) Abernethy. Glenna graduated with a registered nurse diploma from the Carleton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Woodstock, New Brunswick in 1958. She married Robert (Bob) E. Nevers in 1960 and they had 2 children, Kelly and Blair. The family moved from New Brunswick to Caribou in 1967 and Glenna began working as a registered nurse at Cary Memorial Hospital a few years later. She worked on the surgical and pediatric units for several years. In later years she became the nurse manager of the surgical unit at Cary Medical Center until her retirement in 1989. She worked with a wonderful group of health care professionals during her time at Cary. Glenna and Bob moved to a retirement community in Lakeland, Florida in the early 90's where they were fortunate to enjoy 30 happy years there together. Glenna was an avid reader and enjoyed time with her family, camping, and travel. In her retirement years in Florida she volunteered at the community library, enjoyed making new friends, and even took up golf. After Bob's passing, she returned to Maine to be near family and resided at the Inn at Village Square in Gorham. She was always happy to have a visit from her granddog, Henna, during her last couple of years in Maine. Glenna is survived by her daughter, Kelly Gardner (VA); son, R. Blair Nevers (Portland); granddaughter, Hallie Gardner and husband, Andre Foltz (VA); granddaughter, Kendra Gardner and husband, David Wahlstrom (CA); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, of 62 years and son-in-law, Douglas, as well as her parents; one sister, Jacqueline Stewart; and two brothers, Vaughn and Carroll "Ted" Abernethy. There will be no visitation or memorial service per Glenna's wishes. Glenna will be cremated at Maine Cremation Care and her ashes will be transported to Florida to rest beside those of her husband's in a private family ceremony at a later date.
