Obituary

Jere Douglass Hoover passed away peacefully on December 9th 2023 in the company of his family after a long and courageous battle with terminal illness. Jere Hoover was born September 10th, 1946 in Lancaster, PA. The son of Harry Leland Hoover and Elizabeth Kendig Hoover, he excelled on both the wrestling mat and the rifle team in his youth. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1968 with a degree in biology, though soon after a shift in interests brought about a lifelong career in nonprofits, ending in 2008 as director of the Maine chapter of March of Dimes. Jere's life was one of joyous pursuits. Whether cruising the country roads on his various motorcycles or strumming out rock ballads on his guitar, he lived fully and in the moment. For much of his life he loved campy movies and cross-country bike trips. In his later years, this matured to a preference for quiet evenings on the porch overlooking the pond, a fine cigar in one hand and a glass of the cheapest bourbon in the other. Many of those who he touched will remember his keen sense of humor and sharp wit hidden behind a gentle countenance. He was a loving husband and father, and took great joy in doting upon his furry best friend Diesel. In the end, Jere left everyone — his doctors included — in awe of his toughness, fortitude, and bravery in the face of terminal disease. Jere is survived by his wife, Anne Piecuch, and their two children, Alexandra Hoover and Douglass Hoover. He was predeceased by his sister Daryll Knighton of Lititz, PA. At his request, there will be no services.
