Judith 'Jude' Weed, known as the FedEx Lady in the Freeport area for 35 years, died during heart surgery at Maine Medical Center on October 29, 2021. Daughter of Gilbert and Marjorie Weed of Deer Isle, Jude is survived by her older brother Charles, twin sister Nancy, brother-in-law Dan, nieces Courtney, Lucy, and Willow, and her beloved dogs Crickett and Esme and cats Keeper and Micro. Jude earned her Associate Degree from Husson College and began her career as a legal secretary before turning to a brief career in sewing- from bridal gowns and doll clothes to sewing boat sails. In 1986, she joined FedEx and never looked back to an indoor job, preferring to be on the road, outdoors, and meeting people. Devoted to her customers and FedEx, Jude was a highly respected employee who worked tirelessly delivering parcels six days a week through harsh winters and tourist-laden hot summers, always bringing with her a big smile and biscuits for the dogs. She considered everyone on her route her extended family and committed herself to providing the best service possible to the many residents and businesses on her route. She rarely missed a day of work and often worked late into the evening during the holiday season, always ensuring her customers got their packages on time. It wasn't just the ordinary that set Jude apart from most people, it was the extra something that others remember: the package delivered (at work) to a busy customer who had to work late during the holidays at a Freeport business, the well wishes to her customers, and the pride in her work as a FedEx courier. As her FedEx manager said, "Judy 'bled purple' in her loyalty to FedEx and her dedication to her customers". Jude was an exceptional seamstress and a talented, creative artist who enjoyed making illustrated cards and sending cheery notes to her friends. She was an extremely independent, sharp-witted woman who was a strong advocate for all dogs, cats, and birds, and treasured walks in the woods and along beaches with her dogs. Her current rescue dogs Crickett and Esme, and cats Micro and Keeper, have been thoughtfully placed in pairs in private homes with help from Delia's Delightful Dogs in Freeport, the Falmouth Veterinary Clinic, and other caring friends. A celebration of Jude's life will take place on Sunday, December 5 from 2-4 at the Freeport Community Center. In lieu of flowers, please send cat/dog food or monetary donations to the furry friends of the Freeport Community Center food pantry with a note in the memo line: Pet Food for Food Pantry, or send donations to the Coastal Maine Humane Shelter in Brunswick.
