Julie Haggerty, 83 of South Portland Maine passed away peacefully on July 8, 2024. She was born August 8,1940, to Ada and Arthur Poulin of Waterville, where she grew up with her 5 sisters and two brothers. After graduating from Waterville High School, Julie went on to earn her teaching degree at Gorham State Teachers College where she met her future husband, Richard Haggerty. Julie began her teaching career in the Waterville and Portland public schools, and later at Holy Cross School in South Portland where she taught kindergarten until 2001. Julie and Richard raised a daughter and two sons in South Portland and were married for 52 years. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church and her faith gave her peace, comfort and strength. Julie and Richard became grandparents to ten grandchildren who were a source of joy and pleasure to them both. To remember Julie is to remember how she made you feel….. welcomed, accepted, loved, listened to, nurtured, and never judged. Her door was always open and she welcomed you with smiles and hugs as well as a good chance of warm blueberry muffins and coffee to offer. There was always something cooking in her kitchen with a family member in mind…. a meal to share, birthday cakes, chocolate cupcakes, or her signature blueberry muffins to be delivered. She gave love unconditionally and people loved her in return. Julie loved simplicity. She found pleasure and joy in the small things and appreciated nature. She loved camping with family and being close to the natural world. She deeply cared about the environment, and lived a life that made few demands upon it. She was an environmentalist before it was popular and knew the importance of recycling. Julie enjoyed spending time with her siblings and their many excursions. She was an avid sports fan and was currently following tennis at Wimbledon. Her greatest joy came from supporting all of her grandchildren's activities. Julie is sadly missed by her children, daughter Carmen Haggerty, son Richard Haggerty, son and daughter-in law Edward and Faith Haggerty, grandchildren Jonathan and Julianne, Joseph and Jacob, Anna, Jack, Olivia and Cole, brother Larry Poulin, sister and brother in-law Donna and Mark McIntyre, sister and brother in-law Carmen and Ray Otis, devoted nieces and nephews, and many loving friends. Julie was predeceased by her husband Richard, grandsons Eric and Liam, sisters Lorraine, Connie, Muriel, and brother Richard. A memorial mass to honor Julie will be held on Monday, December 2, 2024 at 9 am at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Rd., South Portland, ME.
