DURHAM - Laurel Ann McCormick, 67, passed away peacefully on May 7th, 2023, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, with her family by her side. She was born in White Plains, NY on January 26, 1956, the youngest child of the late John Everett "Ev" Broeze and the late Juliana Felten. In the early 1960s, Laurel's family moved to Norwalk, CT; a place with friends and memories that would always remain special to her. During her time in Norwalk, Laurel enjoyed traveling to the beach and boating on Long Island Sound with her family. She graduated from Norwalk High School in 1974. Laurel moved to Maine following the birth of her son Jason, where she lived until 2005. Laurel had a passion for learning and was a lifelong student, earning an associate degree, two bachelor's degrees, two master's degrees and finally, a PhD in 2010. Prior to her return to Maine in 2019, Laurel lived in California, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Florida. In addition to learning, Laurel was passionate about animals, including her beloved dogs, cats and many horses. She loved spending time outside gardening, collecting distinctive rocks, hiking and especially playing with her granddaughter, Kristen, with whom she had a very close bond. Laurel is survived by her son, Jason McCormick and his wife Carrie of Durham, their daughter, Kristen, Laurel's brother Robert Broeze and his wife Sue of Yardley, PA, their children Justin, Matthew, and Jennifer and their respective spouses and children She is also survived by many nieces and nephews from her prior marriage. Laurel was predeceased by her mother and father, and all her aunts and uncles. A private family celebration of Laurel's life will be held at a future date. Laurel's family would like to express thanks and gratitude to the people who made it possible for her her family to honor Laurel's wishes including her the doctors and staff of Maine Health, CHANS Home Health & Hospice, and her "daughter" Carrie McCormick. The family would also like to thank Laurel's friends and family in Florida and Pennsylvania who helped her maintain her independence in her final years.
