Obituary

Mark Nelson Fohlin, a long time resident of Green Street, Gorham, Maine passed away on March 26th, 2026 at the age of 87. He was born on March 22nd, 1939 to Herbert and Mildred Fohlin and grew up in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. He met his beloved wife of 63 years, Stella Wilson (from Dublin, Ireland), on Cape Cod, where she worked as a nanny. Mark graduated from Boston College and served in the Coast Guard Reserves. He worked as a purchasing manager at Honeywell and Data General before retiring.

They had three daughters, Darragh Ferranti (Edward), Deborah Lord (Michael), and Deirdre Keliher (Patrick). He instilled in his daughters a love of the outdoors and the importance of following their passions. Mark had many hobbies over the years, including flying small planes, scuba diving, sailing, golfing, hunting, and fishing. He and Stella enjoyed travel to Ireland and Alaska, as well as the Caribbean and the Grand Canyon. They realized their dream of owning a Maine camp when they found the perfect place in Denmark Maine after retirement and they spent many happy hours there with friends and family.

Mark valued his friends and took the time to call them and to have coffee regularly. He went on fishing trips to Alaska, Maine sporting camps, and upstate New York with them many times over the years. We thank them all for their love and friendship.

Mark and Stella were a vibrant part of their Green Street neighborhood over the last 40 years and greatly miss their neighborhood friends, especially Pete, Lou, Becca and Caleb, who have been lifelong friends and who have been so very helpful watching over their beloved home over the last year. We thank them for their love and support.

Mark was diagnosed several years ago with a rare disease called Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. He was able to maintain his physical ability until recently due to his high level of fitness, obtained through a lifetime of walking and other exercise, especially his beloved golf, at which he excelled. Even in assisted living, he was committed to his physical and occupational therapy to maintain his function to the end of his life.

The family wishes to thank everyone at The Enclave in Scarborough, Maine who have lovingly cared for Mark and Stella (and their family) since they began residing there in January of 2025. We thank Dr. Catherine Cadigan for her recent compassionate care. We also wish to thank Gentiva Hospice for their wonderful care and support of Mark and his family over the last week of his life.

A small family celebration of life will be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Defeat MSA Alliance at www.defeatmsa.org. Condolences may be sent to Stella Fohlin, 18 Black Point Rd. Apt. 212 Scarborough ME 04074.
