Obituary

Norma Elisabeth (Beth) DeHaas, 64 , of Randolph, Maine, passed away Friday, April 15, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice, following a long illness. She was born May 10, 1957 in Newcastle, Pennsylvania to Dr. and Mrs. Herman De Haas. In 1959 she moved with her family to Orono, Maine. She grew up in Orono, attending local schools and graduating from Orono High School in 1975. During these years Beth developed her love of the outdoors. From camping trips with her family to exploring tidal pools and beaches along the Maine coast and time spent at Camp Natarswi in the shadow of Mount Katahdin, the love of being in the outdoors became a part of her. During her summers at Camp Natarswi she completed the requirements for the Junior Maine Guide program. She attended the University of Maine graduating with honors in 1979 with a degree in Forestry. While she attended The University she was an active member of the UMO Woodsman's Team. This is a co-ed organization dedicated to maintaining the old woods skills and competing on the intercollegiate level throughout the Northeast and Canada. After college Beth took a position as a Forester with Great Northern Paper Company. Among the projects she was involved in was collecting samples and conducting research on the spread of the Spruce Bud Worm along the Maine Canadian border region. Beth eventually took a position as an Environmental Specialist with the State of Maine Department of Environmental protection. For many years she was an inspector in the Department's Underground Tank Program. She finished her time with the Department working with industrial and municipal wastewater treatment programs. Beth loved Maine, and every experience that brought interaction with the Maine woods or the Maine coast. In her free time and with retirement she took every opportunity to continue to explore the variety of natural environs this state offers. She was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her brothers Pieter of Carmel and David of Mount Desert and their families. At her request, there will be no services.
