Obituary

HALLOWELL, MAINE - Richard "Dick" M. Hayes, 92, a lifelong resident of Hallowell, passed away on February 3, 2026, at the home of his daughter in Portland, Maine. He was born in Augusta on May 15, 1933, the son of the late Maurice and Alice (Carrier) Hayes.

Dick grew up in Hallowell and graduated from Hall-Dale School. He made his home there for 89 years before moving to Portland to live with his daughter and her family. A devoted member of St. Matthew's Church, he served for many years as a deacon and remained deeply committed to his faith community throughout his life.

He began his working years in the family business, Hayes Bakery, before joining the Augusta Mental Health Institute as an aide. Dick later enlisted in the Maine National Guard, where he proudly served for more than 42 years, retiring at age 60. Never one to slow down, he returned to school to become a certified nursing assistant and medication technician, continuing his lifelong dedication to helping others through his work at Gray Birch Manor. After retiring a second time, he went on to serve the City of Hallowell as both a city assessor and a city council member.

Dick was the embodiment of the values of the Masons, charity, brotherhood, and personal growth. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #5. Honoring his heritage, he was also a longtime member of Le Club Calumet in Augusta.

Outside of his family, sports were Dick's greatest passion. He spent many years umpiring and refereeing football, basketball, and baseball, earning the respect and affection of athletes, coaches, and families across the region. He was also a devoted Boston Red Sox fan, faithfully following the team through every season and celebrating their victories with the same enthusiasm he brought to all aspects of his life.

Dick was predeceased by his beloved wife of 72 years, Jean, his brother, William "David" Hayes, and his brother-in-law Brian R. Marson Jr. He is survived by his sons, Sam Hayes and his wife Carrie of Bancroft, and Andrew Hayes and his wife Yvette of Brunswick, Maryland; his daughters, Sandra Hayes and her husband Ken of Portland, and Ashley Hayes and her partner Jeanne Harbinson of Lewiston; his sisters-in-law, Marie Hayes and Linda Marson; his brother, Dana Hayes and his wife Linda; five grandchildren-Courtney, Acadia, Sophia, Cameron, and Ethan; one great-grandchild, Cole; and several nieces and nephews.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Jeanne Harbinson for the exceptional care, compassion, and love she provided to Dick during the last two years of his life.
