Stephen J. Bobalek died peacefully on December 23, 2023 at Bella Point Freeport after a short illness. He was born November 5, 1945 in Cleveland Ohio, son of Edward and Marie Bobalek. After graduating from the University of Maine Stephen used his multiple degrees to help others through education and counseling. After putting his love of math to use as a teacher- helping people struggling with anxiety surrounding math for several years- he returned to school to become a counselor. He finished his career as a high school guidance counselor in Maine where he enjoyed working with students who would have otherwise fallen through the cracks, helping many of them become successful members of society. In retirement he continued working as a counselor, specializing in math tutoring, memory care for people who suffered from dementia and Alzheimer's, and working with struggling students. Living on the coast and working in education he was able to enjoy his lifelong passion for sailing and spent the summers cruising up and down the coast of Maine in his beloved sailboats. In addition to his love of sailing and math Stephen had a passion for reading, history, nature and education. He is survived by his sister Margaret of Hopkinton, New Hampshire, brother John and wife Donna of Vienna Virginia, brother Thomas of Raleigh, North Carolina, brother Charles of Burketville, Maine, brother Philip and wife Lorna of Wilmington, North Carolina, son Edward of Lisbon, Maine, granddaughter Kayla of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, grandson Dominic and wife Diana of Augusta, Maine and great granddaughter Ember of Augusta, Maine. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years Sharon, whom he cared for long term as she suffered from dementia, and sister Elizabeth. A celebration of life for Stephen and Sharon will be held this coming summer.
